French Wine Wholesale Pricing: How to Compare Like for Like

A worksheet mindset for negotiations with independent French producers.

Begin with the right question

A French producer may quote ex-cellar, ex-works or a different delivery basis. These are not interchangeable: handling, transport, insurance and export formalities may fall on different parties. Never compare a producer's quote with a US wholesale invoice until quantities, currency, bottle format, included services and applicable taxes are reconciled.

What to verify before taking action

Start with a per-bottle purchase figure, then build a transparent bridge to the landed cost. Include cases and pallets, freight, broker, documentation, duty and excise exposure, warehousing and breakage allowances. Separate estimates from written quotes. Where a freight cost is spread across a small shipment, its share per bottle can be materially higher than in an optimized load.

Turn the research into a decision

For a sustainable negotiation, discuss repeat volume, payment timing, vintage continuity, exclusivity and marketing support before demanding a dramatic discount. The cheapest bottle can be a poor commercial choice when packaging, shelf positioning or replenishment fails. Ask both buyer and producer to review the same cost assumptions.

A verified margin model is more persuasive than an arbitrary discount target.

Working checklist

  1. Record Incoterm and tax treatment
  2. Model costs per bottle at several shipment sizes
  3. Check payment, exclusivity and reorder terms

Frequently asked question

Is ex-cellar price the same as landed cost?

No. Landed cost depends on the actual route, shipment, taxes and services purchased.
