How to Write a French Wine Sourcing Brief That Producers Can Quote
Specify wines, volumes and market constraints before asking for samples.
Begin with the right question
A strong buying brief does more than request a red wine from France. It explains the destination state, retail or restaurant channel, desired positioning, target landed price, intended volume and expected reorder pattern. Without those inputs, producers cannot compare offers fairly and buyers receive samples that are difficult to evaluate.
What to verify before taking action
Define sensory priorities as ranges and preferences rather than empty adjectives. For example, ask whether the list should emphasize Mediterranean Grenache blends, structured Syrah, fresh white wines or organically certified cuvées. Include bottle format, closure, packaging, minimum order, language requirements and documentation needs.
Turn the research into a decision
Separate mandatory conditions from negotiable preferences. A certificate required by the receiving market is not equivalent to a preferred label design. Likewise, a headline ex-cellar price is not a comparison unless vintage, Incoterms, quantities, taxes and services are consistent. Record why each sample was shortlisted and which follow-up information remains missing.
An actionable brief lets both sides say yes or no early, before expensive sampling.
