Is Your Winery Export-Ready? A Practical Assessment
Evaluate operations before promising an international buyer anything.
Begin with the right question
Export readiness starts with the product. Is the proposed wine available in the named vintage, in commercially useful quantities, with traceable lots and dependable quality? Can the estate provide the necessary analyses, production details, packaging specifications and invoices promptly? A polished story cannot compensate for missing logistics information.
What to verify before taking action
Next consider the commercial model. Producers should know their minimum viable price, margin at proposed order sizes, payment terms, stock allocation and realistic bottling or fulfilment calendar. They should also understand who arranges transport and bears risk at each point, rather than agreeing to an undefined 'delivered' price.
Turn the research into a decision
Finally test the communication workflow. A buyer may need responses in English, label adaptations, technical clarifications or compliance documents on short notice. Choose one accountable contact and a simple shared checklist. An honest 'not ready yet' can preserve a potential relationship better than a shipment that fails.
Treat export readiness as an operational capability, not a badge.
