Export Wine Pricing for Independent French Producers

Build a viable offer without confusing shelf price and cellar price.

Begin with the right question

A producer should not reverse-engineer a French retail shelf price into a US wholesale offer. The buyer may face transport, import charges, distribution layers and local taxes, while the estate still needs to cover viticulture, vinification, bottling and its own commercial costs. Both sides need visibility into the applicable pricing basis.

What to verify before taking action

Prepare tiered quotes that clearly state currency, taxes, collection point, minimum quantity, validity period and vintage. A price difference should correspond to something tangible: order size, packaging, payment timing or service scope. Avoid promising a price before checking whether the desired label, closure and packaging are already available.

Turn the research into a decision

Protect the estate's economics by modeling the effect of volume and repeat orders. A trial shipment can carry exceptional one-off costs; it should not necessarily set a permanent wholesale price. Record the assumptions used and renegotiate when tariffs or logistics materially change.

Strong negotiations make costs explicit; they do not hide them.

Working checklist

  1. Specify the exact delivery term
  2. Protect a sustainable estate margin
  3. Recalculate for trial and repeat shipments
