Wine Labels for the US Market: Questions French Producers Must Ask
Start label review early and involve the legally responsible importer.
Begin with the right question
An attractive French front label may not satisfy all US federal or state requirements. The approved text can depend on wine type, alcohol content, origin, importer information and other product-specific facts. For wines within the applicable TTB approval rules, the importer should confirm the correct COLA status before commercial shipment.
What to verify before taking action
Do not print thousands of back labels based on a mock-up or on a certificate issued for a different product. Exchange artwork as versioned files, record the exact vintage, alcohol strength, container size and producer details, and have the importing partner confirm each claim. Organic language or appellation claims deserve particular attention.
Turn the research into a decision
Keep a clear approval trail: reviewer, date, version, document received and outstanding issues. When a label changes, recheck whether the earlier approval still covers the product. This protects both buyer and producer from preventable rework.
Label compliance is a workflow, not an afterthought at the loading dock.
Working checklist
- Collect current wine specifications
- Ask importer for written label review
- Retain final artwork and approval evidence
Frequently asked question
